Melissa Cullen's family heritage is a blend of Sicilian and Italian roots from her father and Portuguese and Cape Verdean ancestry from her mother. Growing up as the middlechild in a large family, she was surrounded by the energy of five sisters and three brothers. She spent her early years in Brighton, Massachusetts, and latermoved with her family to Newton, MA, where they settled into their dream home. The neighborhood was entirely of large families, fostering a close-knitcommunity where everyone supported each other.
Influencesfrom Family and Early Struggles
, Demetrius and Richard, were key figures in her life. Demetrius, the eldest, became a basketball star in the early 1980s, inspiring her to participate in track and gymnastics. She later served as co-captain of her cheerleading team for two years. Richard, her youngest brother, had a successful career in professional athletics, appearing on several magazine covers. Despite her family’s support, she faced challenges growing up as the only Black family in her neighborhood. She encountered racial tensions, especially during an unexpected racial conflict at Newton South, which made her feel like an outsider.
Early Career: From Camp Director to Entrepreneur
Melissa’s career journey started with her love for working with children. She spent many summers attending camp with her siblings and later became a Camp Director, working her way up from Counselor in Training (CIT) to Assistant Program Director. She also studied interior design at Newbury College and Suffolk University in Boston, expanding her skill set for future endeavors. Her career took many paths. She was a wedding designer and planner, creating memorable moments for couples. She also opened a Floral Expressions flower shop and ran two daycare centers, gaining hands-on business experience. Melissa also ventured into home interior design and real estate, managing properties and helping clients renovate homes. These varied experiences laid the groundwork for her philanthropic work later in life.
Shorelinesof Hope: A Commitment to Service
Melissa Cullen founded Shorelines of Hope, a nonprofit organization focused on helping people experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit will provide essential services like a soup kitchen and showers, offering four meals daily. She is working to open the facility in Rhode Island, where she resides, to provide resources and support to those experiencing homelessness. Volunteers will manage the facility, ensuring that people experiencing homelessness receive food, dignity, and care.
Having spent over12 years as a volunteer counselor, she understands the importance of service. She is dedicated to ensuring Shorelines of Hope becomes a meaningful resource for the community, offering food and the hope and support needed to rebuild lives.
Shore Adventure Centers: An Inclusive Future
In addition to Shorelines of Hope, Melissa plans to open Shore Adventure Centers in 2027.These all-season camps will be designed to serve individuals with special needs, people with paraplegia, and transgender people. The camps will offer fully trained staff, ADA-compliant facilities, and amenities like an indoor and outdoor pool with a lift. They will be free of charge for children from inner-city backgrounds, allowing them to escape their everyday struggles and experience something life-changing.
Melissa is seeking 25 to 30 acres of land in Foster, Rhode Island, a rural area known for its scenic beauty. The land will offer a peaceful environment for out door activities and will be the perfect setting for the Shore Adventure Centers.
Building Partnerships for Success
To ensure the success of her nonprofit and camp initiatives, she is building partnerships with organizations that share her mission. She plans to collaborate with the ASPCA for dog therapy, the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for internships, and local food companies to help supply meals for her programs. Melissa also works with sports organizations, including the Special Olympics, to ensure that children from all backgrounds can benefit from her camps. In addition, she is collaborating with the state police to implement safety and lockdown training for staff.

Melissa’s career and philanthropic work reflect her commitment to helping others. After achieving personal and professional success, she has focused on making a lasting impact. Whether through her nonprofit, Shorelines of Hope, or her upcoming Shore Adventure Centers, she is dedicated to providing opportunities for those in need.
